Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Russia. His father, Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin, was a factory foreman, while his mother, Maria Ivanovna Shelomova, was a factory worker. Putin grew up in a communal apartment with his parents and two older siblings.
In 1975, Putin graduated from Leningrad State University with a law degree. He then joined the KGB, the Soviet Union's security agency, where he served for 16 years. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Putin entered politics and rose through the ranks to become the president of Russia in 2000.
Putin's personal life has been relatively private. He was married to Lyudmila Shkrebneva from 1983 until their divorce in 2014. They have two daughters, Maria and Yekaterina, who have largely stayed out of the public eye.
As president, Putin has been credited with stabilizing the Russian economy, strengthening the military, and reasserting Russian influence on the global stage. He has also been criticized for his suppression of political opposition and the media, as well as alleged human rights abuses.
During Putin's presidency, Russia has been involved in several major international conflicts, including the conflict in Ukraine and the Syrian Civil War. Putin has also been accused of meddling in foreign elections, including the 2016 United States presidential election.
In 2020, Putin proposed a series of constitutional amendments that would allow him to remain in power until 2036. The amendments were approved in a national vote, and Putin is expected to continue as Russia's president for the foreseeable future.
