2020 Stanley Cup playoffs tournament:
The 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs tournament was the postseason of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 2019-2020 season.
The tournament featured 24 teams, with the top 12 teams from each conference qualifying for the playoffs.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament was played in a bubble format in two hub cities: Edmonton, Alberta and Toronto, Ontario.
The top four teams from each conference, based on their regular-season points percentage, played in a round-robin format to determine their seeding for the playoffs.
The remaining eight teams from each conference played in a best-of-five qualifying round to advance to the playoffs.
Once the 16 teams for the playoffs were set, they were seeded based on their regular-season points percentage, with the top seed playing the lowest-seeded team, and so on.
The playoffs consisted of four rounds: the first round, the second round (also known as the conference semifinals), the conference finals, and the Stanley Cup Finals.
Each round was a best-of-seven series, with the first team to win four games advancing to the next round.
The playoffs began on August 1, 2020, and concluded on September 28, 2020.
The Tampa Bay Lightning won the Stanley Cup, defeating the Dallas Stars in six games in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most valuable player of the playoffs.
The 2020 Stanley Cup playoffs were unique due to the bubble format and the expanded field of teams, which allowed for more teams to have a chance to compete for the championship.
