After law school, Biden returned to Delaware and worked as an attorney before being elected to the New Castle County Council in 1970. He was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1972, at the age of 29, becoming one of the youngest people ever elected to the Senate.
Biden served in the Senate for 36 years, representing the state of Delaware. During his time in the Senate, he became known for his work on foreign policy, including serving as Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. He was also a strong advocate for civil rights and was instrumental in passing the Violence Against Women Act in 1994.
In 2008, Biden was selected as the running mate for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. Obama and Biden won the election, and Biden served as Vice President of the United States from 2009 to 2017.
In 2020, Biden announced his candidacy for president and went on to win the Democratic nomination. He faced off against incumbent President Donald Trump in the general election, winning by a margin of 306 electoral votes to Trump's 232. Biden was inaugurated as the 46th President of the United States on January 20, 2021.
Throughout his career, Biden has been known for his empathy and his ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He has faced personal tragedy, including the death of his first wife and daughter in a car accident and the death of his son Beau from brain cancer. Biden has also been a vocal advocate for mental health awareness and has spoken publicly about his own struggles with stuttering.
As president, Biden has focused on a wide range of issues, including the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, infrastructure, and racial justice.
