Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 is going to be released In theaters on May 5th 2023.
James Gunn, the director of "Guardians of the Galaxy" movies, is known for his love for outcasts, and the upcoming "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" continues to showcase his unique vision despite being a part of a massive money-making franchise. The movie still has some of the common issues that have been plaguing recent Marvel movies such as a bloated runtime and a typical explosive finale. Nevertheless, Gunn has balanced corporate needs with personal creativity to deliver a movie with witty dialogue, great performances, and excellent filmmaking.
The movie opens with Rocket Racoon, who is beaten up, and the Guardians trying to save him while delving into his origin story. The Guardians are also dealing with their personal baggage, such as Peter's emotional instability over the death of Gamora and her alternate timeline version not remembering him. Gamora helps the Guardians on their quest to save Rocket, but her love story with Peter does not drive the narrative. The rest of the gang, including Drax, Nebula, Mantis, and Groot, are back, but the cast has become too large to fit into one movie.
"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" stands out when it deviates from the "product over art" aesthetic and gets clunky and weird, which is what makes it more appealing. The movie is at its best when it embraces the human touch, has genuinely unsettling creature designs, and feels like it is taking place in actual physical spaces. Chris Pratt gives an excellent performance as Peter Quill, who is dealing with heartbreak, and Zoe Saldana is having fun returning to the basics of her character Gamora. However, the movie is predominantly about Rocket, who overcomes his trauma to be the hero he was meant to be.
Although the villain is underwritten, the story's theme goes beyond the usual hero/villain narrative, exploring the concept of a vengeful God who lashes out when his creation proves him wrong. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" is chaotic and personal, with a final act that feels like it's fulfilling MCU requirements. However, every time the movie felt like it was becoming content-driven, it won the audience back with its creativity and uniqueness.
