Andrew Cogliano, a forward for the Colorado Avalanche, suffered a neck fracture during Game 6 against the Seattle Kraken on Friday, according to a source familiar with the situation. The source confirmed several reports but spoke on condition of anonymity since the team has not officially announced the injury. Cogliano's return to play is uncertain.
During the game, Cogliano was hit from behind into the boards by Jordan Eberle, and he left the ice to go to the locker room. Eberle was penalized for boarding while Cogliano eventually returned to the game, which the Avalanche won 4-1, tying the first-round series at 3-3. However, Cogliano's injury was later confirmed, and his availability for future games is uncertain.
Although Eberle was not given any supplemental discipline for his hit, Colorado's Cale Makar was suspended for Game 5 after his hit on Jared McCann. Cogliano was an essential player in Colorado's third Stanley Cup championship last season, and he brings grit, tenacity, and experience to the ice.
The Avalanche is already dealing with the absence of their captain, Gabriel Landeskog, who has been out all season after knee surgery, and Valeri Nichushkin, who has been out for personal reasons since Game 2.
